What I think

Leadership is a question of development | Development is a response to attitude.

Just as a professional musician perceives subtle nuances and harmonies more intensely than a normal music lover, as a professional coach I observe human behaviour more intensely than a normal person. I notice the restraining constraints and the conflicts that prevent my clients from doing what they prefer.

With a unique set of methods whose components are based on scientific studies, my internationality and Far Eastern-influenced wisdom, I am an expert in creating a process of self-reflection especially in people who have a great responsibility as leaders. The realisation of the power of personal causation raises the intrinsic motivation of people to a new level, which is mainly characterised by being able to act with greater ease in challenging situations.

This is exactly the goal: to support you in your leadership position, to manage complex uncertain situations as well as ambiguities and to master intercultural relationships, to increase your personal influence on the outcome of events and thus contribute to your personal growth.

Who I am

For more than 45 years I have been an expert for leaders and people in intercultural work environments. Born and raised in New Delhi, India, I have always been drawn to people. With a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities from the University of Delhi in my pocket, I started my professional career in 1977 as Managing Director for a German-Indian-American women’s fashion label in Neuss. Until 2010, I managed the business in several companies and was a member of their boards. During these various career stages, I lived in more than 12 countries around the world and speak eight languages fluently. My thirst for knowledge and development led me to study brand management at Rushmore University in the USA between 2004 and 2008.

In my desire to give more people in professional positions like mine more composure and ease despite the responsibility, I decided to take a professional coaching course during my last station as managing director at a large company. This was followed by further training as an intercultural coach, moderator of intercultural didactics and a degree in psychology at the University of Hagen.

Today I live with my wife south of Munich. We have two wonderful children together, who are now studying and going their own ways.

Reasons

What motivated me to become a coach

What if the professional position and the family can no longer be compatible?

In my position as CEO at Sympatex Technologies Asia Ltd. Hong Kong from 2008 and then as COO with global responsibilities, my family and I were faced with the choice of relocating to China or jetting across the globe regularly between Munich and Hong Kong as a long-distance husband and father in addition to the required business trips.

As a happy family that really enjoys time together, the „long-distance family“ model did not really meet with approval. However, the option of moving to China caused even more discomfort for both my wife and children. For my children, after attending school in Italian and in German, the idea was now also unacceptable in Chinese and English. The outrage was great.

I found myself in a situation where I asked myself: What is really important to me? What am I good at? How can I give AND be in line with our idea of family?

What if I can help people think about their own thinking?

My wife spontaneously replied to my question about what she thought I was best at: „Arun, you learn very quickly and when you explain something, people start thinking about their own thinking.“

At that time I was not aware of metacognition, as I later learnt in my final academic studies in psychology. Nor did I really know what coaching was. However, I rather naively asked my wife what she thought of coach as my next profession. It would fit my knowledge and corporate experience, was her answer – certainly with the perception that a coach is a kind of consultant.

With the intention of helping other people, I did the training to become a professional management coach. But something was missing for me. My first thought was how to offer a service with so little knowledge that would impact my clients‘ lives. I wanted to go deeper into the subject.

After taking a few online MOOC courses, I realised that scientific knowledge about the human psyche and phenomena that determine human behaviour is the foundation for coaching. As a result of this realisation, I enrolled in psychology at the Open University of Hagen (Germany).

When I returned to Germany from Hong Kong, I had the idea to write a book about coaching. I had noticed that everyone who had help and support to offer had become a coach: business coach, shamanic coach or outdoor coach and many other thematic directions of coaching.
The training in social sciences helped me to understand how research and interviews are conducted. So it was easy for me to write a book that does not deal with the topic of coaching in a dry and purely scientific way.

The questions that moved me myself in the phase of reorientation, that demanded clarity and answers, will certainly help other people who wish to change their thinking and behaviour:
What is coaching? Who is a coach? Why is coaching different from counselling or advice, training, instruction, teaching and many other ways of transferring knowledge to offer help to the seeker?

When a person can methodically get their clients to think about their own thinking and engage with their own cognitive processes, we speak of metacognition. If a person can implement methods that enable a client to develop multi-valued options to get themselves out of their own inertia and hopelessness, then they are coaching. Then that person is a coach.
